Offline voice eligibility

Does Google Translate voice work offline?

Downloaded languages let Google Translate handle text offline. Offline live voice is documented for Pixel 9, 10 and 11 with English paired with one of ten languages; downloading a text pack alone does not establish that capability.

Check your phone and language pair

Google's Android help limits offline live translation to “Pixel 9, 10, and 11 users.” The table below records what the inspected documentation establishes, checked October 29, 2026. It is not a physical-phone test or a claim about every Pixel submodel.

Phone
Pixel 9, 10 or 11
Offline live voice status
Documented for the English pairs below
What to check
Google says the language picker marks supported downloads “Live & Text”; check the exact phone, app and pair.
Phone
Other Android phones
Offline live voice status
Not established by the cited offline-live documentation
What to check
A downloaded text pack or a similarly named Pixel system feature does not establish microphone translation offline.
Phone
iPhone or iPad
Offline live voice status
Not established in the inspected Google iOS live-translation page
What to check
The inspected page does not promise offline live translation. This absence does not prove it is impossible.

The documented pairs have English on one side:

  • English ↔ Italian
  • English ↔ Spanish
  • English ↔ French
  • English ↔ German
  • English ↔ Portuguese
  • English ↔ Hindi
  • English ↔ Russian
  • English ↔ Swedish
  • English ↔ Japanese
  • English ↔ Indonesian (Bahasa)

French ↔ Spanish is not established by this list. That is an inference from the documented pairs, not a test result; two downloaded packs do not establish a different offline live pair.

Sources, checked October 29, 2026: Google's Android live-translation requirements and Google's iOS live-speech page. Check those pages and your app again before relying on the documented eligibility.

Use the Translate app's requirements

This decision concerns speech entering the Google Translate app through its microphone. Google's separate Pixel system guide describes Settings → System → Live Translate: phone-call translation on Pixel 10 and later, and media translation on Pixel 11 and later. Those are different features; their device rules do not expand the Translate app's offline microphone or language-pair list.

Google's download instructions describe language packs for offline translation. A pack alone does not establish offline speech capture. Hearing typed or stored text spoken aloud is an output observation; it does not show that the app can hear and translate new speech without a connection.

Record a disconnected rehearsal

Editorial checklist, not tested by us. Before a trip or live talk, record the exact setup and what you observe. Obtain needed downloads first, turn off both Wi-Fi and mobile data, verify they remain off, then speak a fresh sentence into the app.

  • Phone model / OS version / Translate app version: ___
  • Language pair / selected app mode / required output (text, audio or both): ___
  • Wi-Fi off / mobile data off / fresh sentence used: ___
  • New translated text observed: ___; spoken output observed separately: ___
  • Result: observed / unavailable / unclear; what still needs checking: ___

If eligibility or the observed result remains unclear, arrange connectivity or a separately verified translation method before relying on offline speech. Same-language captions and spoken playback do not establish cross-language speech translation.

PewTranslate's personal translator runs online, is not an offline option, and accounts are not open.
